I’m a seasonal kind of guy, really. I like Fall, all of it, and most of Winter. Spring I’m not too crazy about, because of my allergies and Summer downright sucks. Fall means walking around weather. Fall means riding with the windows down at night until you’re almost too cold and too crazy to roll them up. Fall means coffee at any time of day (although Summer hasn’t put too much of a damper on this). And orange food. I want and need my orange food. Naturally, I’m waiting with bated breath on the imminent end of hot weather and the slow death of foliage. In my seasonal waiting room, this album plays (if only for the beautiful first track, the obvious “Autumn Leaves”).

So I electronically signed my contract for Suite 101 as an official freelance writer. My first assignment (self-selected) is a review of The Magnetic Fields’ 2008 album “Distortion.” The album was released earlier this year and its probably taken me a good seven months to actually enjoy it. I honestly had to get past the noise to hear the words. As I’m writing this to take a brain break from working on my article, I thought I’d share another little tidbit with you; some words from Roland Barthes’ “A Lover’s Discourse,” the book that’s guiding my reading of Stephen Merritt’s new musical exploration of love. Take it away Roland!
“To try to write love is to confront the muck of language: that region of hysteria where language is both too much and too little, excessive…and impoverished.”
